Abstract

To solve the traffic jam in Bangkok fundamentally, compact and accessible urban structure is indispensable where the expansion of urban space is curbed and accessible public transport is sufficiently provided.

Cities in developed countries who failed to curb the urban expansion have to pay huge effort on the urban structure change. Developing cities in ASEAN countries including Bangkok have chance to improve sustainability of cities in leapfrog way by strategic planning of urban structure anticipating future economic growth.

The leapfrog urban design is a concept to avoid the increasing environmental loads and deterioration of quality of life which were on the trajectory of developed countries experienced. Instead, it will utilize the integrated planning of land use and transport to reach the sustainable mature economic state. In this study, a microsimulation system to assess the impact of the leapfrog urban design on the urban sustainability.

Research Contents

1.Finding current state of location and transport activities

Current situation and trend of location and transport in Bangkok metropolitan area. Especially capture the car ownership and urban expansion accompanied with economic growth. Summarize future challenges of Bangkok metropolitan area.

2.Set up the datasets

List up the available datasets from statistics and open for the input of land use and transport microsimulation model.

3.Research dialog with administrative agencies of Thailand

Find the urban transport policy and research requirements towards Thailand 4.0 through the dialog with administrative agencies including BMA and MOT.

4.Development of LUTI microsimulation model

Develop land use and transport design scenarios and simulate their impacts on the location choice and travel behavior.

Compare a design tool and guideline for the land use and transport design for the Bangkok.

5.Optional future: scenarios of LUTI design and their impacts

Develop land use and transport design scenarios and simulate their impacts on the location choice and travel behavior.
